Fire inside ice: Geyser in Iceland one second before eruption
This beautiful photo by Tatyana Kildisheva shows a surreal scene: gas apparently glowing inside water inside the Icelandic geyser Strokkur, just one second before it erupted. How did she do it?
The process for timing the shot was very simple: just sit, wait, and have a good reaction to press the shutter button fast. I did not have my tripod and camera remote control with me.
TrES-2b, about 750 light years from Earth is a Jupiter sized planet, but normally gas giants are fairly bright. TrES however is tres black, reflecting only 1% of the sunlight that reaches it, making it one giant black sphere. The planet itself is darker than just about any substance found on Earth.
Science is more than a body of knowledge, it’s a way of thinking, a way of skeptically interrogating the universe. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we’re up for grabs.
